Thinking About a Child's Electic Guitar? Here's Some Good Advice

By Steve Murray If your child is under the age of 10 and would like to learn how to play an electric guitar then the size of instrument you purchase is crucial. Remember when you are thinking of buying a child's electric guitar the one you purchase shouldn't be too large because they will find it difficult to play. But also it shouldn't be too small otherwise they could outgrow it very quickly. Many of the world's guitar makers today now produce smaller sized guitars that are suitable for children to play. If your child is aged between 6 and 10 years then going for a ¾ size guitar that measures around 30 inches is going to be the best option. Whereas for children aged between 3 and 6 years a ½ size guitar is going to be the best one for them. However, it isn't just your child's age which will determine the size of electric guitar that you purchase for them. Your child's height is also going to be a factor in what size instrument that you purch

How Do You Extract a Groove From a Drum Loop?

By Eddie Bazil While we are on this subject, wouldn't it be great if you could extract quantise templates from other sources and use them in your own music? What if I told you that you could extract a groove quantise template from an audio loop? Would that excite you a touch? Most decent audio/sequencing packages like Cubase will offer you an 'Extract Groove or Create Groove Quantise from Hitpoints'. Hitpoints are the same as markers. You apply these hitpoints to the peaks in the audio file and then use 'Create Groove Quantise from Hitpoints' in the audio menu. Of course, the software you are using will have different terminology or tools, but they all do the same thing. You can then use this quantise groove template exactly as you would any other groove template within the quantise menu option. This tool is extremely effective when dealing with drum loops as drum loops have distinct peak points (where the kick, snare, hi hats etc peak), so it makes

Gathering all the information that you can get about speakers that you are considering is essential to buying the right DJ speakers for your needs. But what information should you know? There are different kinds of speakers out there with different specifications that all make a difference to the sound you are looking to produce. If you're looking for a DJ speaker or speakers that can fill a stadium full of 12,000 people, then you will probably want to consider buying more than two speakers. But if your main venue will be at a club in front of 150 people, then two speakers will probably suit your needs. After you find out where your gigs are going to be and how many speakers you will need, now you need to figure out what kind of music you will be playing the most. If you're going to be playing rock 'n roll or alternative mu

The Secrets to Making a Great Live Band Video

By Bobby Owsinski There are basically two things that you need to make a great live band video (assuming that you play great and put on a great show) - great audio and a tripod.  Forget about camera quality, resolution, format, or any kind of specs.  If your video sounds bad or is shaking like crazy - it's just a bad video although there are a few exceptions that we'll touch on in a minute.  Let's look at the audio first.   Audio is 50% of the Final Product. Despite what anyone tells you, audio is always looked down upon as the poor stepchild of picture by video people, mostly because they don't understand it.  That being said, if the sound is bad then the picture always seems worse than it really is, so it's really important to pay close attention to the audio when making a video.   Here are some rules of thumb regarding audio for video: Bad audio + good picture = bad video   Good audio + bad picture = bad video   Good audio + good picture = may

How Loud Should We Play?

By Bobby Owsinski Ah, the age old question. How loud is too loud for the room? When you're playing a gig and the audience complains about the volume, they might mean the PA speaker volume, guitar volume, the stage sound or a combination of these things. Then again, the problem can lie elsewhere and can not only be easily fixed, but make you sound a lot better in the process. Usually the audience will complain about the volume if two things happen - the volume is the same level throughout the song and from song to song, and if there's a particular frequency that's so piercing that it feels like an ice pick through the brain. Here's how to play at a level that feels comfortable and still isn't overpowering for the audience. Dynamics - Not only will playing dynamically make the band sound tighter, but it will control the perceived volume level for the audience as well. If the band plays as loud as it can only at the peaks of songs while it plays at con
