Why Should You Learn To Play The Piano? Let's Count The Ways!

By Kathy Ferneau

Why should you learn to play the piano? You may wonder that, especially if you are an adult with a busy lifestyle.

Is it worth the time and effort? Yes, of course, and there are many reasons.

  1. Playing the piano fulfills a childhood dream.
Many adults didn't have the opportunity to take piano lessons as a child, but the dream is still there.

It's never too late to learn. That tired old saying about teaching an old dog new tricks--just forget that!

Other adults took lessons as a child, but didn't appreciate them or didn't put forth any effort to really learn. If you fall into this category, stop beating yourself up. You are wiser than you were as a child and you can still play the piano now.

Informal surveys of private piano teachers reveal that in some studios, half of the students are adults.

  2. Playing the piano is not as difficult as you might think.
Keep in mind that we aren't talking about entering the Tchaikovsky competition next year. For adults who want to have fun making music, play Christmas carols and hymns, and satisfy their creative urges, learning to play the piano is accessible to just about anyone.

It isn't difficult to produce a tone on the piano--just press down the keys. With other instruments you have to learn how to breathe, how to hold the instrument, how to hold the bow, how to pluck strings, and on and on.

With piano, you don't need any other instruments. You are in effect, the entire "orchestra."

Instruction books are readily available and easy to follow.

Classes and teachers are everywhere--in music stores, in private homes, and you can even find teachers who come to your home.

Try on-line courses with piano instruction on multimedia--DVDs, audio cassettes, and web-based teachers.

  3. On the other hand, playing the piano can be a challenge.
If you like a challenge, the sky is the limit. Aim to play Beethoven if you want to. Nothing is stopping you and the feeling of accomplishment is extremely gratifying.

  4. Music can be your mission for your church.
Many churches need musicians for their services. You can fill this need and make a worthwhile contribution.

  5. Piano playing keeps the brain sharp and alert.
Playing a musical instrument engages every part of the brain as well as developing fine motor skills.

  6. Making music relaxes you.
In this case, the old adage is true; music soothes the savage beast. Stress reduction, blood pressure lowering, peace of mind--find all of them through making music.

  7. Playing the piano is fun.

  8. Impress friends and family.

Why should you learn to play the piano? You have so many reasons to learn, and no reason not to!
