Midi Controllers in Fruity Loops Studio

By Saud Siddiqui I highly recommend investing in a midi controller, because they are an essential tool when producing music in FL Studio or any other production software. Having one will definitely allow you to express your music more easily and fully, and will also allow you to work more efficiently. Where to Get Midi Keyboards Almost every music store carries midi keyboard. Note that you may already have a keyboard that is midi compatible and not even know it. I had a keyboard for many years of my life (it was just sitting around) and when I got into music production I discovered I could hook it up to my FL Studio and use it. This was great because I could figure out if it was worth it to buy an expensive controller. Look around and see if you have an old keyboard in your home. How to Setup a Midi Controller (Drivers) Most of the time, you will get instructions with the controller you buy. You will just need to install some drivers, and connect the controller (usual

Audio Mixing Tips

By Anthony Pell Here are some general tips for mixing that I have learnt over the years. When mixing it is important to check your mix on a variety of speakers and not just your studio monitors. While studio monitors can sound great that can sometimes leave a false impression of how good your mix really sounds. Often studio monitors provide a great clarity and detail to the music that you are listening to. Those little subtle effects in the background of your mix may not be heard as clear as you think in a regular stereo or on a pair of cheap iPod headphones. Check your mix on everything you have from your deluxe home theatre sound system to a cheap and nasty boom box or car stereo. I often check my mixes on my mp3 player with cheap headphones. The mp3 player has a bass boost which in the past has told me that my mixes are too bassy turning them to mush. Now I am more aware of what the bass levels should be when mixing on my studio monitors. Another thing to do while ch

Mark Bishop Releases Ground Breaking Southern Gospel Album - "The Fields of Love"

By Tim Eutin Southern Gospel Music singer-song writer, Mark Bishop recently released a ground breaking new album entitled, "Fields of Love". The album is unique in that all thirteen songs on the project work individually and collectively to tell a story. "It is a musical journey of faith in the heartland", comments Mark. "It happens in rural American. It is a story of a farmer and his family, his wife and son. It is a story about a family that has faith, loses faith and their journey back to faith." "This may be the best album of the year.", comments Tim Eutin , Program Director and Morning Show Host at the He's Alive Radio Network. "Each song is well crafted and stands alone. Taken together they form a story that is so captivating and emotional, I was moved to tears. It is by far Mark's best work to date." The sound quality of "Fields of Love" is fantastic. "We went full orchestration throughout

Tips on Choosing Headphones and Monitors When Mixing Down Your Music

By Greg Mason Many of the most popular headphones in the world - the ones you get for free when you buy a Walkman - are inherently tinny and cold sounding, with hardly any bass frequency response. So be careful not to make critical mix decisions based solely on how it sounds in the headphones. And make sure you understand the characteristics of the phones you're using. Probably the best advantage to checking the mix with the "cans" is to get a fresh perspective. A new angle almost always exposes some flaw or at least suggests a question you hadn't yet considered. Professional studios typically feature both near-field monitors and much larger "Main" monitors, mounted high in the wall or on stands. Home/Project studios usually cannot afford such a luxury, due to both cost and space issues. But is it such a luxury to have a second set of monitors? The answer is 'no' and 'yes'. No - Pro engineers spend 80-90% of their time using the

How to Make Puppets with your Children

By Nikoletta Bocz Kids like to play with puppets, because they can use their fantasy during this period (and they have rich imagination). They can imagine peoples, animals, different situations and life attitudes. These puppets will be prepared from wooden spoon. This is a simple and cheap idea, which is in every household. It will entertain your kids for a while. You need the following raw materials: wooden spoon cardboard paint paintbrush scissors colorful ribbon glue And the game can begin! First of all let your kids choose their favourite animals. For example: dog, cat, lion and so on... Second step: paint the wooden spoon with the basic colour. You can use bravely high colors. For example a mouse can be blue, the cat may be pink, in this case it's not problem. The main thing is your child feel the decision freedom and use his imagination. (You can take a look at a sample picture on my website.) Third step: cut ears from the cardboard, embell

College Families Bushwhacked by New Loan Legislation

By Reecy Aresty On September 4, 2007, President Bush signed the College Cost Reduction Act of 2007, designed to make more financial aid available to the poorest families, as well as lowering interest rates for new borrowers. As a bonus, the bill also created an opportunity for students to avoid repayment of loans by teaching in some inner city schools, or by working in public service jobs for ten years, after which time the loan balance will be forgiven. The Act also reduced interest rates on new subsidized Stafford Loans from 6.8% to 3.4% over four years, and increased the amount of Pell Grants from $4,310 to $5,400 per year over the same period of time. Though long overdue, it genuinely seemed to be a good piece of legislation that promised financial aid at lower rates and more availability of grant money to students. However, at the bill signing ceremony, President Bush, in what now appears to have been a foreboding understatement, said he didn't know how all th

Help Piano Students in A Bad Mood Feel Better

By Sujanti Djuanda The students could be in the bad mood while taking lessons. Force them to play will not make them playing well even the kids often persist in not wanting to play. Let them just sit with no activity is also not the good solution. As teachers, what should we do so that the lessons can still be valued? As my experienced, the following tips will help students in the bad mood feel better and improve their music knowledge. 1. Being Storytellers a. Tell a short biography of composer and show his/her pictures since was child. b. Tell a story behind the music. For instance, Fur Ellise was composed by Ludwig van Beethoven and the original title was Bagatelle for piano in A minor. It was most probably dedicated to Therese Malfatti, his piano student in 1809-1810. Beethoven could be in love with her but this topic is still debated. Years after Beethoven's death, a researcher Nohl stumbled upon the autograph of the little piece when visited the Malfatti's fam

Concert Pitch: Piano Sonata No. 12 in F major, K. 332/300k, Allegro–1st movement (1783)

Piano Sonata No. 12 in F major, K. 332/300k, Allegro–1st movement (1783) Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) By Sujanti Djuanda "Oh, Papa, a piano sonata, but it isn't finished yet," Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart began composing the sonata in his five and but in adult life, his piano sonata spanned the years 1775-1789 including this one. All Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart sonatas composed for the fortepiano, which was the smaller and less powerful predecessor than the modern piano, and written to be performed both by the composer and his students. This sonata was written at the same time with two others sonatas (K.330 and K.331) as a set, most probably during a visit to Salzburg where Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart introduced his wife, Constanze Weber to his father, Leopold and sister, Nannerl. Then it was ordered by Viennese publisher, Artaria and published in Vienna (1784). It received its Carnegie Hall premiere on March 16, 1935, with Artur Schnabel as performer. The Allegr

Classical Music Review: Nocturne No.15 Opus 55 No. 1 in F minor (1843)

By Sujanti Djuanda History of Nocturne's term The term 'Notturno', in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, referred to vocal or instrumental compositions, which were generally played outdoors. For example, Haydn composed eight Notturnos for King Ferdinand IV of Naples, and Mozart a Serenata notturna (KV 239). At the beginning of the nineteenth century, John Field (1782-1837), the Irish pianist and composer, invented the Nocturne as single movement impromptu compositions for piano that maintain a single mood throughout. He gave this title to his sixteen short pieces (written between 1812 and 1835) in which his first set of three, widely circulated and reprinted throughout post-Napoleonic Europe, appeared from CF Peters of Leipzig in the autumn of 1814 (Brahms owning a copy of this edition). In Christmas Day 1832, Chopin heard Field played his C minor Seventh Concerto (forerunner of Field's own same-key of Andante spianato Op 22 [published independe

Five Fingers Same Position notes Reading Method

By Sujanti Djuanda There are beginner piano books begin by introducing five notes i.e. CDEFG in right hand (RH) and CBAGF in left (LH) by using the same fingers position such as on RH note C played by thumb, D played by index finger, etc. On LH note C played by thumb, B played by index finger, so on. I called as "five fingers same position". The benefit is before added the new note, beginners have practiced some similar exercises so they, especially kids will not confused by rhythm, names and positions of notes. Because of many exercises that using the same fingers position, mostly kids tend to read the fingers numbers as notes positions. For instance, they mean no. 1 on RH is C - always played by thumb, no. 2 is D - always played by index finger and so on, likewise on LH. In early lessons, students seem fluently in notes reading but the problem comes when start playing pieces with no "five fingers same position". If students have to use "five fi

Music Studios Policies vs. Indiscipline Students

By Sujanti Djuanda   Studio policies will make music studios run well. For example, the policy state that if students did not pay tuition fee at first lesson of the month, they must pay late fee. Then students will generally pay on time. Another policy, if students miss lesson without any notification, lesson cannot be made up. Then students will generally notify teachers if they cannot take lesson.   Unfortunately, it is not always work well. The following examples show studio policies did not work for certain families. They decided to quit or did not mind to be penalized than followed the policies. Parents decided to quit than pay late fee although they have signed the agreement of studio policy. Parents did not mind to pay late fee so each month, their children still late in tuition payment. Parents asked their child to miss lessons without notifying teacher because they would go shopping and did not mind lessons could not be made up. Student m

Prelude and Fugue No 16 in A Flat major, BWV 862 (1722)

By Sujanti Djuanda "Thank God! I have learnt something absolutely new," said Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart when heard Bach's hymn for the first time. Johann Sebastian Bach's music was most influential in the history of western music despite in his lifetime it was regarded as "old-fashioned". The growth of J.S. Bach music's stature continued in subsequent years since his "St Matthew Passion" was performed by Felix Mendelssohn in Berlin (1829). The WTC Book I, which considered as the Old Testament of keyboard works, seems to be inspired by the composition of the organist, Johann Fischer, "Ariadne musica neo-organoedum" (a collection of 20 preludes and fugues in ten major and nine minor keys) that published in 1702. But Johann Sebastian Bach produced the mature compositions as first collection of 24 preludes and fugues in all keys. It composed for "musical youth desirous of learning as well as for the Pastime of those Already

Playing the Guitar - Acoustic Stylings

By Ignatius Gluck   The acoustic guitar is an instrument which produces sound via the vibration of the strings through the hollow body, sound board and sound hole. String vibration can be achieved by using a flatpick, usually made of plastic, or by simply strumming the strings with the thumb. One can pick individual notes or strike a combination of strings at once to produce a chord. A more intricate method is fingerpicking, a technique which uses the thumb and tips of the fingers to strike individual strings. Fingertips, fingernails (which are usually grown longer for this specific purpose), fingerpicks which are attached to the thumb and fingers can all be used for fingerpick guitar playing. The acoustic guitar is a very portable instrument. Lightweight and easily transportable it makes the perfect musical companion. The lowest tone string, the string you would strike first in a chord with a downward pick motion, is called the sixth string and each subsequent string is

How is Learning Chinese Writing Different From Learning a Western Language?

By Kah Joon Liow In the modern Chinese writing system, each character is a form of its own, representing a particular sound and at least one meaning. In other words, each Chinese symbol is a unity of form, sound and meaning. To learn Chinese writing, you need to know each Chinese symbol or character individually. You will need a vocabulary of at least 3,000 characters to understand 90% of what you read. A vocabulary of 4-5,000 characters allows you to understand almost everything written in Chinese in the modern context. Although there are more than 60,000 characters listed in the largest Chinese dictionaries most of them are ancient symbols and no longer in use. Only a very small proportion of Chinese characters- some 300, perhaps- are simple representations of natural objects; all others are composite signs. Each sign generally has two components: a graphic component (which represent a man, woman, tree etc.) and a phonetic component, which gives some idea of the pro
