Singing High With Power

It's the last chorus of the song, and the singer is giving everything he/she has to bring the point of the song home, so the singer lets out a powerful and emotional high note that rings out for ages. Everybody listening are getting goosebumps all over, what a performance!

Does this sound familiar to you? Singing high notes with power is something at least 95% or the singers out there want to be able to do, it has a very emotional effect on us all. I decided to put together an article with two tools that work for a lot of people which don't require any technical training at all, it's as simple as it gets really. Ok, here we go.

There are two things that naturally increase pitch; One is distance and the other is emotion. If you were standing next to me and you asked me: "what time is it?" I'd probably answer you in a relatively low pitch. However, if you were across the street and asked me the same question I'd probably answer you in a much higher pitch, because the body and mind knows that higher pitches travel further and faster. In other words, we automatically raise our pitch when distance is increased. This tool can be applied to your singing by imagining that you are singing to a crowd far away, or at the back off a hall. Make a clear mental image of singing to a person standing far away, and notice what happens. You'll probably find that the high notes get a lot easier the very second you do.

Emotions impact us as well when it comes to singing high with power. If you were telling me that you bought a couple of stamps today, I'd say "that's great" in a somewhat low pitch, but if you told me that you just won the lottery and want to sponsor my solo career I´d say "THAT'S GREAT!!!" in a higher pitch haha. So the key here is, the more emotionally attached we are to a conversation, the higher the pitch and drive in the voice tends to be. The same goes for other emotions like anger; If you are somewhat irritated, you might be able to keep the volume down but at a certain "anger-threshold" the volume is turned up and so is the pitch. To use this tool, do your best to get emotionally involved with the song and the message in it. When you practice, try to relate to the topic of the tune. Another possibility is to see the audience in front of you and how you vow them with your performance.

So in summary, distance and emotions are great tools to help us increase the power and range of the voice, since it is based on natural responses engrained deep within us. Give these ideas a try and see what happens, you might surprise yourself :)
